[Also in Division C3] Novel compounds of the general formula wherein R is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, chloroalkyl or phenyl, n is 1-5 and x is an integer not greater than 3, are prepared by reacting a phosphite of the formula (R<SP>1</SP>O) 3 P with an N-(chlorophenyl)-amino alcohol of the formula The reaction is generally carried out above 100‹ C., under an inert atmosphere and in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide or hydroxide as catalyst. The type of phosphite product depends on the molar ratios used. In the case of chloroalkyl phosphites the product may also be obtained by reacting PCl 3 with the amino alcohol at 50-90‹ C. in an inert organic solvent and reacting the product so obtained with an alkylene oxide at temperatures below 30‹ C. The products may be used as stabilizers in halogen containing vinyl resins and as flame resisting agents in polyurethane foams. The N-(chlorophenyl)-amino alcohols can be obtained by condensing the corresponding chlorobenzene with an excess of the corresponding amino alcohol by heating under reflux and details are given for the preparation of N-(trichlorophenyl)-ethanolamine. |
