A guillotine for cutting continuously travelling flat metal strip comprises a frame carrying fixed and movable blades, a fluidoperated piston and cylinder actuator being connected to the movable blade so that the blade makes one complete cutting cycle in each direction of displacement of the piston, electromagnetically operated valve means controlling the actuator and end of travel damping means associated with each end of the piston-rod. The shear comprises a fixed blade 3 supported by a frame 1 and a movable blade 6 which is reciprocated by an hydraulic or pneumatic jack 7. The piston-rod 9 of the jack extends through both side members of the frame into casings 26, 26a each of which contains cushioning members which operate at the end of the stroke. Each cushioning device consists of several fixed parts 19 and corresponding movable parts 16 mounted on the face of a cylindrical part 15. The parts 16 are solid rubber pads and the parts 19 are short thick-walled rubber tubes fitted between metal end-plates. The peripheral surface of the part 15 is formed as a cam 17 which operates an electrical contactor 25 in the circuit of an electromagnetic valve which controls the jack 7. The valve has a large bore so that operation of the shear is very rapid.</p> |
