A deferred action battery has a sealed outer casing containing an activator section 20 and a battery section 22 separated, before activation, by a partition including a membrane 32, and means 30 for piercing the membrane to activate the battery, the battery section comprising a cup 40 having a hollow central stem 42, the interior of which communicates with the activator section or piercing the membrane, a plurality of cells 36 of planar form assembled face to face in the cup along the length of the stem, each cell having a hole through which the stem passes, and seals incorporated in the cell assembly between the cells. As shown the cells communicate via ports 44 in the stem and ports 51 in column 46 which supports the activator section, with the activator after rupture of the membrane by the drill lance 30 which is operated by the electrically fired fuse 34. Sealing fillets A-D, Fig. 3, of rubber cement are placed round the inner and outer edges between the separator and anode of each cell and between the anode and cathode of adjacent cells and similar fillets E-F (Fig. 6, not shown) around the leads 13, 15. |
