In a suspension insulator of the type in which a metal cap and pin are attached (e.g. by cementing) to an insulating member, washers are built up from flakes or fibres of insulating material and are formed on one end of the pin and the rim of the cap. These washers ensure that the pin and cap are properly spaced from the insulating member. Mica flakes or chopped nylon filaments may be used. The flakes or filaments are preferably perpendicular to the surfaces of the cap and the pin. As described the cap 8 has adhesive applied to its rim by lowering it into contact with a resilient ball (48, Fig. 5, not shown) intermittently rotating in a bath of the adhesive The cap is then brought to the station shown at which brushes 64 rotating in the directions indicated by the arrows co-operate with rubber vanes 65 to throw up a cloud of flakes or filaments 66. As the rim of cap is lowered into the cloud by a pneumatic ram 40 on the transporting assembly, a contact 36 engages a mercury contact 72 applying a high voltage to the cap so that the flakes or filaments are electrostatically attracted to the rim. The excess flakes or filaments are blown off at a further station (Fig. 7, not shown). The washer on the pin is formed in a similar manner. In another process outlined, the metal cap or pin previously coated with adhesive is passed over a plate covered with a layer of flakes or filaments. The cap or pin is maintained at the same potential as the plate while a grid positioned the cap or pin and the plate and functioning in a manner similar to the control grid of a valve, has an opposite potential applied to it. The flakes or filaments are attracted to the grid and many pass through the grid apertures changing their potential to that of the grid in so doing and are thence attracted to the cap or pin.
