Anthraquinone dyes of the formula wherein R is an unsubstituted or substituted aryl or alkyl group, Z is S or C atom, X is H, Cl, Br, alkoxy or alkyl radical, Hal is Cl or Br and n is 0 or 1 are obtained by reacting an anthraquinone dyestuff of the formula with an unsubstituted or substituted aryl or alkyl sulphochloride or chlorocarbonic acid ester, the sulpho group is then reductively split off and, if desired, the dye is halogenated. Those dyes in which n is 1 are claimed per se. Specified acylating agents are benzene sulphochloride, o-, m- and p-toluene sulphochloride, o-, m- and p-chlorobenzene sulphochloride, m- and p-dichlorobenzene sulphochloride, methane sulphochloride, ethane sulphochloride, propane sulphochloride butane sulphochloride, benzyl sulphochloride and eblorocarbonic methyl, ethyl or phenyl ester. Examples are given for the preparation of the dyestuffs. They may be used for dyeing or printing synthetic fibres blue shades.
