An apparatus for generating a vortex in a collection vessel 10 of a vacuum cleaner comprises a blade assembly 13 that includes a plurality of blades 13A-C mounted to a support member 13D rotatably mountable in the collection vessel 10. By rotating the blade assembly 13, a vortex is generated inside the collection vessel 10, and enough suction is created to draw air through the entire system. The use of a blade assembly 13 to generate the vortex may remove the need for an impeller external to the collection vessel 10, as the blade assembly 13 may be capable of creating enough suction to draw air into the collection vessel 10. This may allow the vacuum cleaner to operate with lower noise. The blades 13A-C are preferably moveable with respect to the support member 13D so that the angle of the blades 13A-C relative to their direction of motion is adjustable. A gear assembly (34, fig 5)may be present to adjust the blades 13A-C. |
