An immunochemical reagent comprises finely divided carrier particles on which there has been adsorbed an inert protein and an antigen or antibody. The protein is such that it takes no part in the immunological reaction in which the antigen or antibody is involved. Specified carrier particles are latices of polystyrene, styrene-butadiene and acrylate of 0.5-1.3Á, erythrocytes, cholesterol crystals, ion exchange resins, colloidion, organic pigments, bentonite and quartz. Specified inert proteins are conjugated and non conjugated proteins (bovine serum albumin, egg albumin, lactal bumin, serum globulin, haemoglobin and lacto globulin) and vegetable proteins or polypeptides (not particularised). Specified determinations are of animal or human growth hormone (HGH) follicle ripening hormone (FRH), yglobulin (rheuma factor) and antigens from Treponema reiteri and T. pallidum, and Examples disclose the adsorption as antigen or antibody of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), HGH, bovine serum albumin (using egg albumin as inert protein), y-globulin, FRH. and the euglobulin fraction of a rabbit antiserum against HCG. The reagent is prepared by adding the inert protein as a solution to a suspension of the particles, ("presensitisation") and subsequently, with or without removal of the inert protein solution, the antigen or antibody is added as in conventional sensitisation. The presensitisation and/or sensitisation may be carried out at 20-60‹C, with further incubation if desired at 20-100‹C.
