Polymers, of b -lactams mono-substituted in the 4-position are dissolved in organic or inorganic acids for spinning. The lactams may be of formula <FORM:1100202/C3/1> where R may be C1- 18 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl, and R1 and R11 may be H, C1- 18/t alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl. R, R1 and R11 may carry substituents and the alkyl radicals may be branched. Lactams specified are 4 - methyl - azetidinone, 3,4 - dimethyl - uzetidinone, 4 - ethyl - azetidinone, 4 - phenyl - azetidinone, 4 - (p - methylphenyl) - azetidinone, 4 - (p - chlorophenyl) - azetidinone, 4 - n - propyl - azetidinone, 3,3,4 - trimethyl - azetidinone, 3,3 - dimethyl - 4 - phenyl - azetidinone and 4-isopropylazetidinone. The polymers may be copolymers of these or polymer mixtures. Acids specified are formic, sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric, acetic, thioglycolic, mono-, di- or tri-chloroacetic or mother liquors obtained in the preparation of these halogenated acetic acids, trifluoroacetic, lactic, pyruvic, hydroxyethane sulphonic acids and mixtures thereof. Acids having a dissociation constant above 10-5 are preferred. Salts of these acids and other solvents, e.g. methanol, methyl acetate, ethers and ketones, may be added to the polylactam/acid solution. The solution may be prepared at 0-40 DEG C. and its viscosity reduced by heating up to 100 DEG C. |
