In an assembly of fuel elements, cellular grids support the elements in parallel arrays. Each grid is formed of stainless steel strip and incorporates circular loops, at alternate cell corners, which engage the fuel element surfaces to function as spacers and to offer resistance to lateral bowing of the elements. The circular spacers may be formed integrally from the grid strips, they may be constructed separately and welded thereto or secured in slots in the grid strips. The spacers can be barrel-profiled or provided with raised bands or pips to effect point contact with the fuel elements. Local overheating due to a decrease in water to fuel ratio at the grid corners is counteracted by locating the corner fuel elements with a displacement inwards towards the grid centre. |
