[Also in Division D1] A cutting device for elongate articles e.g. threads or yarns, comprising a knife having a chisel-like cutting blade operating together with a plane counter-face and with a drive mechanism is characterized in that the knife is arranged in a fixed position and is designed as an anvil mounted to oscillate and the counter-face is displaceable perpendicular to its operating surface and in the central plane of the knife on to the cutting plane of the knife. As shown, a thread 15 is guided between a pivotally-mounted knife 1 and a counter-face 2 which is connected to a rod 6 surrounded by the coil 8 of an electromagnet the armature of which is formed by a spring-influenced piston 9 connected to the rod 6, the arrangement being such that when the electromagnet is energized, the counter-face impacts against the knife to sever the thread. A stop 5 holds the knife slightly inclined to the counter-face. A seal 14 is provided between the rod 6 and its guide 7. The cutting edges of the knife are preferably inclined at 90 degrees or more to each other. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the rod is arranged outside the coil of the electromagnet and is operated by a lever which is attracted by the electromagnet when the latter is energized. A circuit, Fig. 6 (not shown) for operating the cutting device is described. The cutting device may, alternatively, be operated by means of a piston activated by compressed air.
