[Also in Division G6] A nuclear reactor fuel element comprising shaped hypostoichiometric fuel metal dioxide is produced by contacting at least one shaped body of sintered densified non-hypostoichiometric metal dioxide fuel with up to 2 wt. per cent (based on the metal dioxide fuel) of one or more shaped bodies of a fuel metal selected from U, Pu, Th and mixtures thereof, and heating at least part of the composite fuel thus obtained in a nuclear reactor to above 1500‹ C. (preferably 1700-2000‹ C.) under non-oxidizing conditions. The metal dioxide fuel comprises an oxide selected from UO 2 , PuO 2 , ThO 2 and mixtures thereof, and optionally includes up to 2 wt. per cent of a non-fuel metal oxide (e.g. zirconia, yttria). The one or more shaped bodies of a fuel metal may have the shapes of cores, sheaths, end-plates, buttons and inserts in cavities (e.g. at the ends of pellets of metal dioxide fuel). The hypostoichiometric fuel metal dioxide product has an O/U ratio between 1À90 and 2, and reactor operation may be continued using this product as fuel.</p>
