[Class 81 (ii)] A rigid, self-retaining tampon of absorbent fibrous material is produced from a large approximately cylindrical tampon in dry condition by compressing it laterally by the simultaneous application of equal pressures to at least three circumferentially spaced areas extending substantially the full length of the tampon. Suitable apparatus comprises a base plate 11 upon which are mounted plates 13, 14 and 15 as shown. A central hollow shaft 23 is supported on a ball bearing 24 in the base plate and is journalled in plates 13 and 14. It is rotated by means of a gear 28 and pinion 29 connected to pulley 7 which is rotated by means of a belt 8. Spaced at equal angles and distances from the central shaft are five shafts 39 journalled in plates 13 and 14 and rotated by means of gears 34 from the gear 33 on the central shaft. These five shafts have a crank pin 39 at the upper end of each to which are connected by means of pitmans 40 the levers 42 pivoted at 43. These levers have shaped inner ends so that when the tampon is positioned between them the area over which the levers exert their pressure progressively diminishes with the volume of the tampon. The latter falls within the jaws when they are open from the conveyer 3 via the shute 4 and is compressed by the jaws. Simultaneously with the opening of the jaws the bar 57 is withdrawn by means of a pin 62 suitably positioned on one of the gears 34 and operating against the spring band 60, which engages the pin 58 on the bar which is returned by spring 61 on the further rotation of the gear. The tampon thus falls through the hollow shaft and is conveyed away. The pitmans 40 comprise an outer casing in which a spring is compressed by means of a collar screwed into its end and a collar threaded on the shaft which is pivoted to the levers 41. By rotating the shaft the spring can be more or less compressed thus adjusting the yielding stress of the pitman. This yield is necessary because the tampons are compressed to the limit of their compressibility and the interposition of a large tampon would result in the stalling or breakage of the machine.
