A playback method in one mode of this disclosure, namely a playback method that a Blu-ray device connected to a display apparatus implements, includes a first acquisition step in which the type of the display apparatus connected to the Blu-ray device is acquired, a second acquisition step in which a video signal recorded onto a recording medium is acquired, and an output step in which an HDMI version and an HDCP version are selected in accordance with the acquired type of the display apparatus and the acquired video signal is encoded using the selected version of HDCP and outputted to the display apparatus using the selected version of HDMI.
