The present invention relates to a system and method for automating instrument indexing, wherein instrument symbols constituting a design drawing are automatically extracted; the extracted instruments are classified by a type to make a list; and multiple users are freely supplied with the list. The system of the present invention comprises: an instrument index preparing device extracting instrument symbols from a design drawing provided by a design source and analyzing the extracted symbols to be supplied in a form of a list; and an instrument index management server collecting information on instrument index supplied in a form of a list by the instrument index preparing device and providing a service of supplying the information on instrument index to each call wire. Accordingly, human errors and waste of time can be prevented.
