An apparatus comprising: logic at least a portion of which is hardware, the logic to: control heat generation in a device, wherein the device to operate at least in one of a first state and a second state, wherein the device to consume more power in the first state than in the second state, wherein the device to connect to a network at least for a portion of time while in the second state; andin response to the device to change from the first state to the second state, select at least one of a plurality of thermal control solutions to decrease the generation of heat in the device in the second state, the selected thermal control solution to be performed while the device is in the second state to reduce the generated heat to below a predetermined level, wherein the device to operate at a first power level during a wake/update period of the second state and the device to operate at a second power level during a sleep period of the second state, and wherein the device to operate at a higher power level and to sleep at a lower power level,a wake/update operation to be performed at the higher power level in the wake/update period, while the device is in a second state, andthe device to be in a sleep state in the sleep period, while the device is in the second state.
