The invention relates to methods for producing absorbent materials based on clay minerals, preferably smectites, particularly preferably dioctahedral and/or trioctahedral smectites, even more preferably montmorillonite and/or saponite, and comprising the following steps: (1) dispersing and delaminating the starting material; (2) impregnating the monolayers of the starting material with a reactive solution comprising metal oxides added in a quantity equal to the equivalents corresponding to the capacity for cation exchange calculated for said starting material; (3) decanting and washing; (4) drying and calcinating; and (5) milling. The invention also relates to the produced absorbent materials, the intermediate materials of said methods, and the applications of the starting, intermediate or final materials in purifying or treating water.
