A multiple tube heat exchanger comprises a pressure tight shell 5 containing a parallel bundle of tubes 2 fixed in tube end plates 16 and 20, and an intermediate tube plate 21 which separates the heat exchanger into two effective portions, such that the cool medium 6 outside the tubes 2 flows co-currently to the hot medium 1 in the tubes in the portion 3 and countercurrently in the portion 4. In the embodiment shown, the medium 6 which enters the co-current portion 3 through a side entry 7 and leaves via an annular port 8 adjacent the pressure-tight shell 5, is conducted through passages 9 into a flow reversing header chamber 12 and hence into the counter-current portion 4, leaving the heat exchanger through the outlet pipe 13. At its entry into the co-current portion 3, part of the cool medium 6 is deflected and flows through a by-pass formed between the shell 5 and a radiation shield 11, said shield reducing the quantity of heat transferred by radiation from the portion 3 to the shell 5, thus cooling said shell 5. Radiation shields 10 are also used to help cool the shell in the counter-current portion 4. In order to improve the transfer of heat and to control the velocities of flow, baffles 18, 19 can be provided in the space around the tubes to convert the co-current portion 3 into a cross-co-current portion and the counter-current portion 4 into a cross-counter-current portion. The intermediate tube plate 21 which forms a tight sliding fit on the tubes 21, the shell 25 which forms the inner part of the channel 9, the baffles 19 and the outlet 13 for the medium 6 are freely movable in relation to the tube system 2. The tubes 2 are protected from differential thermal expansion by either a piston ring seal 24 or a knee bend (see Fig. 1). A thin gauge insulating plate 22 is located on the side of plate 16 facing the entering hot medium 1.
