PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polyvinyl phosphonic acid by hydrolyzing polyvinyl phosphonic acid di-ester under the presence of an acid, in which the foaming of the reaction liquid during the hydrolysis reaction can be suppressed as well as the use amount of the acid can be reduced, and in which polyvinyl phosphonic acid can be industrially, efficiently and economically produced.SOLUTION: Provided are: a method for producing polyvinyl phosphonic acid including a step (a) for hydrolyzing a polyvinyl phosphonic acid di-ester comprising a repeating unit derived from a vinyl phosphonic acid di-ester represented by formula (1), under the presence of an acid, in a solvent containing water and glycol ether-based solvent; and a method for producing the polyvinyl phosphonic acid further including an acid removal step (b), and removing acid from the reaction solution obtained from the hydrolysis step (a).
