摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modification method and a surface-modified material obtained by the method in which an FeAl intermetallic compound layer having satisfactory oxidation resistance can be easily created with satisfactory adhesion on a surface of a base material made of a ferrous material.SOLUTION: After an adhesion layer created by adhering grains of Al or Al alloy on the surface of a base material made of a ferrous material is formed, solution created by dispersing powder of Al or Al alloy into solvent is coated on the adhesion layer to form a coating layer, the base material and the coating layer are heated to 500 to 1050°C to evaporate the solvent and elements of the powder of Al or Al alloy in the coating layer are diffused over the surface of the base material to make Al in the powder and Fe in the base material react to each other and form a primary diffusion layer having FeAlas a main constituent, and then, the layer is heated to temperature higher than the heating temperature used in forming the primary diffusion layer to create a secondary diffusion layer having FeAl as a main constituent.
