PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starter capable of realizing shorter engine start time without increasing the size of an electromagnetic solenoid device 10.SOLUTION: Starter characteristic switching means includes a variable speed reduction mechanism unit 6 configured by using a planetary gear speed reducer, and a speed-reduction operation switching unit 30 switching over a state of this variable speed reduction mechanism portion 6. The variable speed reduction mechanism unit 6 is set into a reduction mode in which a speed reduction function is active until engagement of a pinion 9 with a ring gear 8 is completed and switched to a non-reduction mode in which the speed reduction function is inactive after completion of the engagement of the pinion 9 with the ring gear 8 in a case of cranking an engine with starter characteristics of low torque and high revolving speed. That is, a starter exhibits the starter characteristics of high torque and low revolving speed since current carrying to a solenoid SL1 starts until the engagement of the pinion 9 with the ring gear 8 is completed, and exhibits the starter characteristics of low torque and high revolving speed during cranking after the completion of engagement. |
