To prevent retarded and uneven vapour bubble formation in a liquid cooled reactor a coolant entry into the core is provided with means for injecting bubbles of inert gas in finely divided form into the coolant. The invention is especially applicable to reactors cooled by liquid metal, e.g., sodium or potassium but is also applicable to reactors cooled by water. The inert gas may be helium. In Fig. 1 the entry of a coolant duct 1 is provided with a spray head 3 formed of porous sintered ceramic material or porous sintered metal and connected to an inert gas supply pipe 4 to produce gas bubbles 2. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the lower end of a fuel element is modified to form the spray head.
