A virtual image display device (100) is provided with a light source unit (111), a polarized light switching unit (112) an image generating unit (115), a light path unit (120), and a projection unit (130). The polarized light switching unit (112) switches the polarization direction of light output by the light source unit (111) between an unaltered first polarization direction and a second polarization direction. The image generating unit (115) generates an image according to the light output by the light source unit (111). The light path unit (120) has a first light path (210) through which light having the first polarization direction passes and a second light path (220) through which light having the second polarization direction passes and for which the light path is longer than the first light path (210). A first virtual image (410) is displayed at a first distance (411) from an observer by light passing through the first light path (210). A second virtual image (420) is displayed at a second distance (421) further from the observer than the first distance (411) by light passing through the second light path (220).
