The invention relates to an apparatus for non-destructively testing metallic workpieces (4) for surface defects by means of a magnetic powder method, in which a medium containing magnetic powder is applied to the surface of the workpiece (4) and, upon magnetization of the workpiece by means of electric coils (1, 2), the distribution of the magnetic powder at imperfections on the workpiece is determined, wherein the first and second coils (1, 2), which are positioned at an angle of 90° in relation to one another in terms of their axial plane, surround the workpiece in an annular manner and bring about the magnetization, and wherein the axial directions of the coils (1, 2) run in each case at an angle of 45° with respect to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece (4). According to the invention, a third coil (3, 6) runs normally, with the axial direction thereof, in relation to the plane of the axes of the first and second coils (1, 2), wherein the workpiece is guided substantially parallel to the plane of the third coil (3, 6) during testing. |
