A ribbon includes a substrate film, wherein the film comprises a tensionable material; and an ink disposed on the ribbon. A length of the ribbon includes portions that have been tensioned to provide a code readable from the ribbon by measuring the tension over the length of the ribbon.

1. A method for reading a code from a ribbon for a printer comprising:
providing a printer, providing a ribbon, wherein the ribbon is encoded with data; inserting the ribbon into the printer; running the ribbon through a portion of the printer; measuring a parameter indicative of tension in the ribbon to provide tension data; performing an algorithm on the tension data to read a code; and operating at least one feature of the printer based on the code.
