Olefins are polymerized in the presence of the solid reaction product of a Gr IVa, Va or VIa metal compound with the reaction product of an organoaluminium compound with a macromolecular compound containing # C=O, # C= N- or -C#N as functional groups. Conventional techniques for polymerization with a Ziegler catalyst are employed and in the examples ethylene is homopolymerized and copolymerized with propylene and in many cases also dicyclopentadiene, using catalysts comprising the reaction products of VOCl 3 or TiCl or both with the reaction product of Al(i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 , Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 , Al(n-C 3 H 7 ) 3 or Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl with polyacrylonitrile, poly-#-aminoundecanoic acid, polycaprolactam, poly(adipic acid-hexamethylene-diamine), polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinylacetate, in some cases also in the presence of hydrogen. The initial reaction of the organoaluminium and the polymer may be carried out by simply mixing and heating, suitably in the presence of a solvent.
