A process for the preparation of 1-menthene epoxide comprises reacting 1-menthene with a hypohalous acid, which may be formed in situ by means of water and a halogen donor, e.g. an N-bromo- or N-chloro-amide or imide, the resulting halohydrin being then reacted with a base, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide, to produce 1-menthene epoxide. The major portion of the product is the trans isomer. Optically active 1-methene may be used as the starting material. |
