[Also in Division G6] A safing wire for use in safeguarding a nuclear reactor to detect surreptitious use thereof is prepared by pulling one or more strands of a low melting metal, e.g. aluminium, one or more strands 30 of a target material, e.g. cobalt, which becomes radiactive on being bombarded with neutrons, and one or more strands 31 of a different metal, e.g. tungsten, through a tube 28 of a high melting metal, e.g. stainless steel or copper, while allowing the last-mentioned strands to kink within the tube, and rotary swaging the tube to compact the assembly. Additional aluminium powder may be introduced.</p> |
