An apparatus for cleaning a floor surface including: a housing including: a source of suction; an inlet for receiving dirty air; a chamber for receiving dirt; and a user graspable handle for permitting a user to manoeuvre the apparatus over the floor surface during use, the handle including: a battery for providing power to the source of suction; and a first connection formation releasably connectable to a second connection formation on the housing; wherein the handle, preferably remote from its connection to the housing, includes a user operable electrically powered device.
