The invention comprises monoazo dyes of formula wherein R is a 2-benzothiazolyl radical which may be substituted, R 2 is a carbocyclic aromatic which may be substituted, R 1 is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl which may be substituted, R 3 is an alkylene group which may be substituted and Y is group -CHR 4 -CH 2 - wherein R 4 is OH, SH, halogen, phenyl- or alkylcarbamoyloxy, alkylthio, alkanoyl, alkanyoloxy, amino alkanoylamido or carbamoyl or a group-CHR 5 -CHR 6 - wherein both R 5 and R 6 are OH, halogen or alkanoyloxy or R 5 is halogen when R 6 is OH or alkanoyloxy, or group -CH 2 - CHR 7 -CH 2 - wherein R 7 is halogen, OH, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy. The dyes are prepared by the usual coupling process from 2-aminobenzthiazole diazo components. Dyes wherein R 4 is alkanoyloxy may be prepared by acylating the corresponding hydroxy-substituted azo dye. The dyes give red and violet shades on cellulose acetate and polyester materials. |
