A screw conveyor having sections 12 .. 15 with different inclinations provides movement in opposite directions of both the balls and the material in a mill 1. The mill has a heating/cooling jacket 2, a screen 4 and balls from 0.2 to 3 mm diameter. The worm section 15 nearest the bottom of the vessel has a direction of conveyance coinciding with the direction of movement of material through the mill while the section 12 nearest the top has an opposite direction of conveyance. Thus flow is assisted at the bottom, while the upper shaft seal is relieved of pressure and any accumulation of grinding balls on the screen 4 is counter-acted. |
