Metals are melted, refined, converted or recarburized by means of at least one flame thrower in which one or more of powdered Fe, Mg, Ca, Al and the suboxides of Fe and Mn suspended in a liquid or gaseous combustible material (e. g. CO) is burnt with cold or pre-heated oxygen or oxygen enriched air, the products of combustion being projected at at least 1000‹ C. on to the material to be melted or into the bath. The temperature generated by the flame thrower may be moderated by addition of excess powdered materials over that stoichiometrically required to combine with the combustion supporters. Optional additions of H 2 O, CO 2 , and oxides of Fe, Mn, Cr or V may also be made to theflame-thrower feed. When the process is used for recarburizing a melt, a hydrocarbon is added in the flame-thrower in the presence of insufficient oxygen for complete combustion.</p> |
