[Also in Division H5] A tubular rod 1 of quartz or quartz-like vitreous material has a coiled resistance element 7, e.g. of tungsten, molybdenum or rhenium, fully embedded and hermetically sealed in the absence of oxygen within the rod and has metal terminals 8 moulded about the outwardly extending ends 6 of the element 7 for the connection of current supply leads 10. The heating element 1 is light-transmitting and withstands temperatures of 1200-1400‹ C. without deterioration, but may be controllably softened and shaped into any desired configuration to act as a heat lamp, Fig. 2, (not shown), an immersion heater, Fig. 3 (not shown), or a hot-plate, Fig. 4 (not shown). The element 1 may be mounted in a parabolic or spherical reflector for directing the radiation. |
