An apparatus, in a motor vehicle, for selecting the direction of travel and automatic gear shifting for one or more speeds for forward drive and one speed for reverse drive comprises a rotary switch for preselecting the direction of travel, a tachogenerator driven in dependence on the speed of the output shaft of the gear-box for supplying current to an electronic automatic gear-shaft device having a shift point corresponding to a predetermined speed of travel, a kick-down switch operable by an accelerator pedal for changing the shift point of the gearshift device to a higher speed of the vehicle and control means for an engine brake adapted to be brought into operation by closing a contact mounted on the brake pedal during its operation during certain speeds of forward travel and is characterized in that the rotary switch 9, the automatic gear-shift device 8 which includes the control means for the engine brake and a distributer plate 6, connected to the electric system of the vehicle, are combined as a unit and are mounted on the facia board of the vehicle. The unit includes an adjusting regulator 10, for adjusting the shift point in the automatic gearshift device 8, which may be adjusted by rotating a slotted spindle 10a by a screw-driver inserted through a hole revealed after removing the operating knob 11 and a marking plate 12. A stop plate 15 is provided on the switch spindle 14 to prevent accidental rotation of the switch from neutral to reverse, the knob only being turnable to this position by depressing it against the action of a spring 19. The apparatus is protected by a tubular casing 21. The automatic gear-shift device is located between a pair of plates 4 and 5, the latter mounting the rotary switch 9 and the former mounting the switch circuits for the gear-shift device 8 and engine brake. |
