PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failure of a lid open detecting switch. SOLUTION: This failure diagnostic system in a fuel consumption device has a lid 10 capable of supplying fuel to a fuel tank 2 in an opening state, the lid open detecting switch 12 detecting the opening state of the lid 10, a switch monitoring ECU 20 preserving an opening history of the lid 10 based on output of the lid open detecting switch 12, and a fuel residual quantity sensor 13 detecting a fuel residual quantity of the fuel tank 2, and has a fuel increase determining mens for determining whether or not the fuel residual quantity of the fuel tank 2 increases based on output of the fuel residual quantity sensor 13, and determines that the lid open detecting switch 12 causes failure when the opening history is not preserved in the switch monitoring ECU 20 when determining that the fuel residual quantity increases by this fuel increase determining means.
