PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying muddy water such as water overflowed from a river and muddy water disposed over a riverbed or a seabed each containing hardly sedimentable particles as its suspended component, which method does not swirl up sediment settled if the flow rate of inflowing muddy water in a settling tank even is increased as in an event of torrential rain or the like. SOLUTION: The method for purifying muddy water by introducing muddy water such as water overflowed from a river and muddy water disposed over a riverbed or a seabed each containing hardly sedimentable particles as its suspended component into a settling tank, causing easily sedimentable particles to settle therein, and subsequently purifying the clear water layer in the settling tank which water layer contains hardly sedimentable particles, is practiced using a settling tank characterized by comprising a reservoir space wherein a plurality of packing members each equipped with tilting plate members of a roughly square horizontal image as viewed from thereabove tilting in one direction are stacked in the vertical direction in a manner forming gaps between the tilting plate members so as to allow the easily sedimentable particles to flow down on the tilting faces of the tilting plate members toward the bottom of the reservoir space.
