<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method of a universal motor capable of reducing the discharging of carbon particles caused by a contamination brush of a universal motor, using a circuit that can be mounted even to a small device while keeping high power efficiency without applying an extra load on a power source, and to provide a vacuum cleaner capable of reducing fine particles contained in the exhaust. <P>SOLUTION: The control method of the universal motor is a driving means of the universal motor 130 comprising a commutator 135 and a rotor comprising an armature winding 133, a commutation brush 134, and a field winding 132. A control circuit 100 comprises an IGBT121 connected in series to the universal motor 130, a high speed diode 122 connected in parallel to the universal motor 130, and a commutation means which commutates with a commercial AC power supply 110 and supplies it to the universal motor 130.
