PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-volatile memory device and a method of operating the same.

SOLUTION: A semiconductor device has at least one memory block each including many memory cells each storing data, and a block state confirmation cell storing information indicating that up to what number of data bits in the memory cell the data is written; and a controller reading the data bits stored in the block state confirmation cell from the memory block.
