PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce luminance irregularity and color irregularity and achieve high-contrast at a low cost, in an illumination optical system and a color composition optical system for a projector using three video display elements, and to reduce mis-convergence in an enlarged image displayed on a screen. SOLUTION: An afocal illumination optical system including a cross-dichroic color separation optics and the color composition optical system are arranged vertically one over another related to the color separation optical system, and a polarized light splitting device and aλ/4 are arranged between the color separation optical system and the video display device. Besides, an optical sensor is arranged outside an effective image display area of a transmission type screen, then, the mis-convergence in the image projected and enlarged on the screen after being displayed by red, green and blue video display device is detected on the basis of the change of the incident light amount incident on the optical sensor, and the driving areas of the video display elements are controlled on the basis of the detection results.
