PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically reduce power consumption if an image forming apparatus is in non-operation for a predetermined time or longer but to automatically activate the image forming apparatus when an operator accesses the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a thermoelectric conversion means that converts thermal energy by user's temperature into electric power by user's touching, a holding means that holds the electric power converted by the thermoelectric conversion means and outputs the held electric power, and a switching means that switches the image forming apparatus between a first mode in which electric power is supplied to all the portions of the image forming apparatus and a second mode in which electric power is supplied to a part of the portions of the image forming apparatus. When the image forming apparatus is in the second mode, the switching means switches the image forming apparatus from the second mode to the first mode upon receiving the electric power output from the holding means.
