PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage to a thermal head due to overheating. SOLUTION: This printer comprises the thermal head 5 having heating elements 15 arranged in a line in a width direction roughly orthogonal to a conveyance direction of an image print medium 3 such that the arrangement length of the heating elements 15 is longer than the width of the image print medium 3, and a platen 6 which is disposed to be opposed to the thermal head 5 with a conveyance path of the image print medium 3 therebetween and holds the image print medium 3 to nip it together with the thermal head 5 with an ink ribbon 7 therebetween beyond the width of the image print medium 3. The platen 6 is, in the event of printing an image, brought into contact with the ends of the thermal head 5 which are respectively disposed beyond the width of the image print medium 3.
