Copolymers consisting of at least 70% by weight of acrylonitrile units, 0À5-20% by weight of units of a monomer of the formula in which A represents a monovalent, aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic radical with an ethylenically unsaturated group, R represents an alkylene radical, and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> represent C 1 -C 4 alkyl radicals or together with the quaternized N atom form a heterocyclic radical, and optionally units of one or more comonomers are prepared by polymerizing a mixture of the corresponding monomers, e.g. in emulsion, dispersions or solution. Examples of the radical A are methacrylamidomethyl, methacryloyloxyethyl,α- methyl - styryl, methacryloyloxyphenyl and methacrylamidophenyl radicals and the radical of the formula CH 2 =C(CH 3 )- COO-(CH 2 ) 2 -NH-CO-NH-(phenylene)-. Optional comonomers specified are acrylates and methacrylates (e.g. the methyl esters), vinyl esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, styrene and its derivatives, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, butadiene, chloroprene, acrylamides and methacrylamides, e.g. N-t-butylacrylamide, vinyl alkyl ketones, and vinylpyridine and its derivatives. Solution polymerization can be carried out in an aqueous concentrated inorganic salt solution or in an organic solvent for polyacrylonitrile; preferably, polymerization is effected in aqueous medium in the absence of emulsifiers, and continuously or batchwise. Suitable catalysts for effecting polymerization include hydrogen peroxide, organic hydroperoxides, alkyl peroxides, ketoperoxides, acyl peroxides, persulphates, perphosphates, perchlorates, chlorates, azo compounds and Redox systems; chain regulators, e.g. mercaptans, may also be present and, also, complexing agents such as metaphosphoric acid, oxalic acid and EDTA. The novel copolymers have a high affinity for basic dyes, and can be formed into films or fibres.
