PURPOSE: A vertical axis Darrieus windmill is provided to enable use in a wide wind speed range by a driving unit for assisting the drive or rotation of a primary rotary shaft at low wind speed. CONSTITUTION: A vertical axis Darrieus windmill includes a driving unit which assists the drive or rotation of a primary rotary shaft at low wind speed. The driving unit includes a cut part(7) which generates drag by wind on one inner side of a primary blade facing the primary rotary shaft(35) and a sub windmill which is coupled with the primary rotary shaft and generates torque by the drag at low wind speed and by lift at high wind speed.
