<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the stiffness of a lost motion spring retention part without causing an increase of weight and the enlargement of dimensions of an internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Since a plurality of bulkheads 91 supporting a camshaft is provided on an inner surface of the cam cover 13 connected to an upper surface of a cylinder head of the internal combustion engine in parallel with a camshaft axial direction and a lost motion spring retention part 98 provided at an inner surface of the cam cover 13 and retaining the lost motion spring is connected to the bulkheads 91, the stiffness of the bulkheads 91 and the stiffness of the lost motion spring retention part 98 are mutually increased without causing an increase of weight and the enlargement of dimensions, and the camshaft and the lost motion spring can be firmly supported. Since the lost motion spring retention part 98 is provided to straddle over an upper wall 81 and side walls 82, 83 of the cam cover 13, the stiffness of the lost motion spring retention part 98 can be further increased.
