PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detection method which enables the detection of a substance to be detected with extremely high sensitivity, and a detector. SOLUTION: In a detection method for bonding a fluorescent label bonding substance B<SB>F</SB>on a sensor part 14 in the amount corresponding to the amount of the substance A to be detected in a liquid sample and detecting the amount of the substance A to be detected on the basis of the quantity of the light caused by the excitation of the fluorescent label F of the fluorescent label bonding substance B<SB>F</SB>, a fluorescent substance F, of which the charged state is changed according to the pH of the liquid sample in the liquid sample, obtained by including a plurality of fluorescent coloring matter molecules by a material transmitting the fluorescence from the fluorescent coloring matter molecules is used as the fluorescent label F. By neutralizing the charged state of the fluorescent substance F by adjusting the pH of the liquid sample in the state that the fluorescent label bonding substance B<SB>F</SB>is bonded to the sensor part 14, the fluorescent substance F is attracted to the surface of the sensor part 14, and the amount of the substance A to be detected is detected in the state that the fluorescent substance F is attracted.
