1,179,049. Skis SKISEARCH, Inc. 15 June, 1967 [20 June, 1966], No. 27715/67. Heading A6D. [Also in Division B7] A fish-scale like bottom surface is provided for skis, of which fig. 1 is a plan view, figs. 2 and 3 are respectively longitudinal and transverse sections on lines 2-2 and 3-3 of fig. 1, fig. 4 shows an alternative form, fig. 5 is a transverse diagrammatic illustration, and fig. 6 shows a modification. The scales may be flattened in the areas 10 (fig. 2) so that the drop-off edges 12 are not as high as those, 16, of fig. 4; however, the tapering or inclined edges 14 may be impressed deeper than those of fig. 4, so as to make the drop-off edges approximately equal in each case. The scale pattern phases out to the edge of the ski (fig. 5) so that the regions 18 are actually blanked out, but the bottom of the ski is essentially flat, 20 (fig. 5), the portion shown by the broken lines 22 having been scraped or ground off, or the mould may have been originally shaped in this manner. In fig. 6 the scales are slightly undercut; they tend to hinge or pivot as shown (26, 28) so as to increase resistance to sliding backwards when skiing uphill. The scaled bottom ski is stated to have more stability in turns than the known grooved surface, and to be easier to turn and control. |
