Tyre building apparatus comprises a variable-diameter drum 5 provided at each end with a ply turn-over airbag 10 resting on pivoted segment plates 11 supported at one end by a flange 9 of the drum, carcass ply fabric 24 being clamped between the airbag and a variablediameter sleeve 16 movable axially to roll the airbag over the drum. The fabric 24 is clamped to the drum by applying suction through passages 6. In the method described the carcass ply cords are initially rectilinear and make an acute angle with the circumferential direction (Fig. 2a, not shown) but are so moved by rotation of the ply-turning devices relative to the drum 5 (see Fig. 4a, not shown) that in the final flat-band carcass the cords lie in the sidewall regions in radial planes but are cross-laid, with the free ends overlapping, in the crown (Fig. 9a, not shown). |
