A clamp for gripping an enlargement on an elongated member, e.g. ball 20 on cable 18, comprises a tubular body 10, a pair of semi-cylindrical wedging shells 22, 24 which together define a seating 26, 28. for the enlargement, a spring 34 urging the shells towards end 14 of the body, co-operating wedging surfaces on the body and shells causing the latter to grip the enlargement upon such movement, and means, slidable longitudinally on the exterior of the body member for moving the shells to the right, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit the release of the enlargement. The means may comprise a sleeve 36, provided with two radial pins 38, which extend through slots 40 in the body and engage in slots 42, 44 of the shells. These latter slots are axially elongated to permit movement of the shells to the right without moving sleeve 36. The shells are pivotally connected by two balls 50, located in diametrically opposed recesses, each recess being formed by a depression of one shell facing a depression in the other. A fitting 12 facilitates attachment of the clamp to a support. Alternatively, the fitting may be formed with a through bore allowing passage of the cable 18 and ball 20, Fig. 4 (not shown). The clamp may comprise two pairs of wedging shells, one at each end of the body 10, Fig. 5 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the wedging shells are formed with peripheral ridges at what would be their left-hand ends as shown in Fig. 1. When the ball 20 is engaged in its seating, these ridges engage in corresponding recesses formed in the body 10 so that movement of the shells to the release position is prevented until the ball has been moved from its seating. |
