A laminating machine for applying a thermoplastic film 10 to a web or sheet of material, which may or may not be printed, comprises a roll of film 9 mounted for rotation about its axis, a roller and doctor blade 30 for applying liquid adhesive from a bath 28 to the film, a drum 11 mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the axis of the roll, stationary rod-like heating elements 38 spaced apart round its inner periphery to heat it and rolls 33 and 34 for laminating the web or sheet of material to the film. The heated drum 11 serves to dry or partly dry the adhesive on the film and is normally driven by friction between the film and the drum. The drum may also be driven from a drive motor 15 via a disengageable clutch 18 to enable the drum to be warmed up before the film is fed on to the drum. One of the laminating rollers 33, 34 may be heated and driven. The web or sheet of material to be laminated is fed to the rollers over a conveyer belt 14. |
