C 17 -Oxygenated steroids of the androstane or 9#,10α-androstane series are prepared by subjecting C 20 -oxygenated steroids of the pregnane or 9#,10α-pregnane series to aerobic enzymatic oxidation using Gliocladium roseum Bainer ATCC 20010 or an enzyme, mutant or variant thereof. The starting material may contain a 3-oxo group and/or one or more hydroxy group at positions 3, 9, 11, 15 and 16, as well as #<SP>4</SP>, #<SP>5</SP> and #<SP>4,6</SP>-unsaturation. The conversion of pregnanes of partial formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each H, OH or O Acyl, X represents the A, B and C rings of the steroid molecule and Y is CO or CHOH) to 17-oxo- or 17-hydroxy-androstanes proceeds in two stages via 17-acetates of formula which, when R<SP>2</SP> is H, may, if desired, be obtained as the major product by suitable control of reaction conditions. The culture medium may contain an " inducer steroid," and several steroids are named for this purpose.
