[Also in Division C3] Novel compounds of the Formula III and the known compounds of the Formula I and II where R 1 and R 2 are alkyl groups C 1-6 , R 3 is an alkyl which may contain oxygen or sulphur in ether or thio-ether linkage or be substituted by a hydroxy group, or is the group where n is an integer from 2 to 6, are prepared by reacting one mole of a dialkyl phenol of the formula with at least the stoichiometric amount of the mercapto compound R 3 SH (or a precursor thereof e.g. the corresponding halide and hydrogen sulphide) and at least the stoichiometric amount of formaldehyde or a precursor thereof, in an inert solvent in the presence of a base, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide, at an elevated temperature. The phenolic methylene thioethers are used as stabilizers for polystyrene resins, esters, plasticizers and synthetic oils. |
